This was something of a shakedown ride south to Mt. Vernon then back again to the Jeffereson and Lincoln monuments. The Mt. Vernon trail was very, very busy this chilly morning, but everyone did well and had a chance to see who rides at the speed they may wish to match once things get serious.
Naomi succeeded in being as visible as possible while co-leaders Mark and Brianne (center and right) led the way and somehow managed to keep track of everyone.
The return through charming, old Alexandria was lovely, as the temps were just about perfect.
It was a very lively scene at the Jefferson, with graduating seniors, bus tour groups and even a cycling group all mingling about and looking for the perfect photo opportunity.
Loud jazz, swing and ‘60s music was coming across the mall, and there were several stylish dancers really enjoying showing all the bystanders some classic moves. Beth and Tom even invented a new dance… The Cycling Swing.
Several team members dipped their back wheels in the Potomac. One of the widowers, Dan (at left) quietly spread some ashes into the River. Peter (from Switzerland) and Joe took their turns.
Tomorrow we begin heading west in earnest, with a 61 mile day and our first taste of spending the night in a campground. Happily, two of the women, Laura and Beth, both accomplished (we think) cooks, drew the first meal prep assignment. Tom and partner Eric (from Cincinnati… a fellow Skyline Chili lover) have the next night.
I fear we will have a difficult act to follow.

You’ll have to teach me the Cycling Swing.
It’s Wonderful for us to follow you all along in that beautiful part of the country. Keep on Pedaling and Smiling.
Seems like a wonderful trip so far and your pictures are beautiful as always. I'm excited to hear about what you and Eric came up with for dinner!
The posts are amazing, but don't feel bad if you skip here and there. Take it all in. Love all the pics!
Great pics! It looks like you are having such a good time! Be safe. 💕🙏🏻
